AirPods Pro 3 vs. AirPods 5: Better Sound or a More Comfortable Fit?

AirPods Pro 3 deliver stronger noise canceling, bass and battery life. AirPods 5 cost less and skip ear tips, which may make all the difference.

AirPods Pro 3 vs. AirPods 5: Better Sound or a More Comfortable Fit?

The AirPods Pro 3 make the stronger case on sound, noise canceling, battery life and extra features. But choosing between them and the AirPods 5 comes down to fit: the Pro 3 seal your ear canal with silicone tips, while the AirPods 5 sit in the ear without them. If that sealed feeling bothers you, the cheaper pair may be the one you’ll actually want to wear.

Fit should decide before the feature list

The AirPods Pro 3’s silicone tips create a seal that helps block outside sound and gives music more bass. It also means some pressure in the ear canal, and that sensation can make long listening sessions uncomfortable for some people. At $249, they cost $120 more than the $129 AirPods 5, but the price difference matters less if you can’t tolerate the fit.

If silicone tips feel fine, the Pro 3 are the better all-round pick. If they’re uncomfortable, the AirPods 5 save you money and avoid the seal.

Try each of the tip sizes included with the Pro 3 before ruling them out. The best size may differ from what works with other earbuds: the reviewer, who usually wears medium tips, found that the small pair fit better here. If the supplied silicone still doesn’t feel right, memory foam tips from a third-party maker are another option.

The AirPods 5 have an open fit, with no tip entering the ear canal. That avoids the pressure from a sealed fit, though the hard plastic can rub during longer sessions depending on the shape of your ears. Their fit also varies from person to person. A loose or awkward fit can affect both sound and how much noise the earbuds reduce.

What the seal changes about listening

The Pro 3 have much stronger active noise canceling (ANC). They reduce the rumble of an airplane cabin, the screech of a subway and noise in a busy office more effectively than the AirPods 5. That difference is useful when you want fewer distractions on a commute or during focused work.

The AirPods 5 still stand out among open-fit earbuds: the reviewer found their ANC effective enough on subway rides and street walks to listen without turning the music up excessively. In those settings, they reduced some noise but didn’t make it disappear. Fit affects the result, so another listener may get a different experience. Both models also offer transparency and adaptive modes that let surrounding voices come through clearly.

Bass is another clear win for the Pro 3. Their seal brings out deep low frequencies, along with more prominent kick drums and bass synths. The reviewer found that low end slightly louder than preferred, but listeners who enjoy electronic dance music or hip-hop may welcome the extra weight. The AirPods 5 still reproduce kicks and bass guitars, though with less impact.

Both models put a little extra emphasis on treble, which can make cymbals and hi-hats sound sharp. The reviewer found that lowering treble in the iPhone’s EQ settings helped. Apple’s loudness-dependent EQ also adjusts the sound as playback volume changes; it can keep music sounding more consistent across levels, though listeners who dislike that processing can’t switch it off.

The iPhone’s EQ controls let you adjust the treble, though they don’t turn off Apple’s loudness-dependent EQ.

SoundGuys’ MDAQS testing, which estimates how a panel of a few hundred listeners might rate sound, found that listeners were more likely to prefer the Pro 3’s default tuning. Both should be acceptable for everyday listening, but the testing supports the Pro 3 if sound quality is high on your list.

Battery and features favor the Pro 3

Apple rates the AirPods Pro 3 for up to eight hours of listening with ANC on. The standard AirPods 5 are rated for four hours, while the $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case are rated for five. That difference may not matter for a short commute, but longer flights, study sessions and workdays put the Pro 3’s extra listening time to better use.

Both pairs offer iPhone features including live translation, spatial audio, conversation awareness and EQ adjustments. The Pro 3 add hearing aid and hearing protection features, along with a heart rate sensor for workout tracking. Both have volume controls on their stems, but AirPods 5 buyers need the $149 version with the wireless charging case to get volume swipes.

Calls don’t provide much reason to pay extra. Both models use Apple’s H2 chip and dual beamforming microphones, and the reviewer found that each kept speech clear in noisy places.

When the AirPods 5 make more sense

Choose the AirPods 5 if ear tips don’t work for you or if keeping the cost down matters more than longer battery life and fuller bass. They offer useful noise reduction for open-fit earbuds, and their four-hour rated battery life should cover a daily commute. Spending $20 more for the $149 version adds a wireless charging case, volume swipes and an extra hour of rated listening time.

The Pro 3 are the better pick if the fit works

For listeners comfortable with silicone tips, the AirPods Pro 3 offer the most complete set of advantages here: stronger ANC, more bass, twice the rated battery life of the $129 AirPods 5, and added hearing and workout features. The AirPods 5 remain a sensible lower-cost option when an open fit is the priority. If you’ve struggled with sealed earbuds before, try the AirPods 5 fit before spending more on the Pro 3.
