Echo Dot (6th Gen) vs Echo Dot Max: Sound, price and smart home features

The Echo Dot (6th Gen) adds smart home controls and Alexa+ support, while the Dot Max makes a stronger case for buyers who put sound first.

Echo Dot (6th Gen) vs Echo Dot Max: Sound, price and smart home features

The Echo Dot (6th Gen) brings smart home hub features to Amazon’s smaller speaker, but the Echo Dot Max still has the clearer advantage for listeners who want fuller sound. The choice comes down to what matters more in your room: a lower starting price and a child-friendly option, or a speaker designed to deliver more bass.

Amazon Echo Dot (6th Gen) vs Dot Max

The new Echo Dot costs £94.99/$99.99 and is available in Graphite, Agave Green, Coral Pink and Glacier White. Its kids’ version costs £104.99/$109.99 and comes in Penguin or Octopus designs. The Echo Dot Max has a higher £119.99/$119.99 recommended price, although it has fallen to £59.99 during sales. Those past discounts make the Max worth considering when prices change.

The Max has the stronger case for music

Amazon says the Echo Dot (6th Gen) delivers 50% more bass than the previous Echo Dot. That’s a notable promise because the Echo Dot (5th Gen) already earned praise for surprisingly good audio, but struggled with bass-heavy tracks. The new model’s full-range driver could address that weak spot, though its performance still needs a review before buyers can judge how well it does.

The Dot Max is the safer pick for anyone prioritising sound today. Its acoustic setup combines a 0.8-inch tweeter with a 2.5-inch woofer, and Amazon says it can deliver up to three times more bass than the previous generation of Echo Dot. In testing, the Max handled vocals and bass-heavy music well. Sound separation was a weaker point, so listeners seeking precise placement between instruments may want to keep that trade-off in mind.

The Max can also be paired with up to five other Dot Max speakers. It can work with Echo Studio models for Alexa Home Theatre on compatible Fire TVs, giving households with those devices a way to build a larger sound setup. The new Dot’s sound claims are promising, but the Max has a reported listening test behind it.

Both use AZ3 and support Alexa+

Amazon’s AZ3 processor powers both speakers. The company says the chip handles some processing on the device, which is intended to make Alexa conversations faster and more natural. In testing, the Dot Max picked up requests even when the speaker was quiet or the user mumbled. The new Dot has yet to be reviewed, so its real-world voice recognition remains an open question.

Both speakers support Alexa for voice requests, timers and compatible smart home controls. Amazon describes the Echo Dot (6th Gen) as purpose-built for Alexa+, its newer assistant experience, which is designed for more natural, free-flowing conversations. The Dot Max can also use Alexa+, so the new model’s positioning doesn’t give it exclusive access.

Alexa+ is included with a Prime membership or costs £19.99/$19.99 per month. Buyers weighing the two speakers should account for that cost if they plan to use the service without Prime. The processor and assistant features are shared, so sound and price are likely to matter more when choosing between them.

Smart home controls are built in

Both models include a smart home hub, allowing them to connect with and control compatible devices without requiring a separate bridge or hub. That gives the new Echo Dot a practical role beyond playing audio, and makes it a more capable option for households starting to connect smart home products.

Each speaker also has Eero built in, which can extend a home Wi-Fi network and help cover areas where the signal is weak. That feature may be useful for people already using compatible Eero equipment; the source doesn’t specify coverage or performance figures, so the benefit will depend on the home and network setup.

A separate choice for families

The Echo Dot (6th Gen) has a kids’ version running Amazon Kids+. The service is free for the first year and includes age-appropriate features such as Stories with Alexa and Sleep Studio. Children can use the speaker as usual, while parents and guardians can manage it through the Amazon Parent Dashboard smartphone app.

The dashboard lets adults set usage limits, choose an age range and review a child’s activity. That makes the kids’ model a distinct option for families, rather than simply a colour variation of the standard Dot. The source doesn’t describe a matching kids’ edition of the Dot Max.

Which Echo should you choose?

The Echo Dot (6th Gen) looks like the more flexible choice if you want a lower-priced speaker with smart home controls, Eero support and access to Alexa+. It also has a dedicated kids’ edition. But its improved bass is still a manufacturer claim until the new model has been tested.

The Dot Max costs more at its listed price, yet its tested sound gives it the edge for music. Its past sale price of £59.99 also means the gap can narrow considerably during discounts. If audio is your priority, watching for another price drop may make sense; if you want the newest Dot or its family features, the 6th Gen is available now.
